CHICKMAUGA MAYOR REMOVED FROM OFFICE IN 4-1 VOTE

The Chickamauga City Council voted 4-1 on February 9, 2026, to remove Mayor Trey Deck from office following an internal investigation into multiple allegations of sexual, inappropriate, and offensive conduct by city employees. The allegations detailed in witness statements and presented during a public hearing included sexually suggestive comments about a female employee’s appearance—such as joking about placing her on a street corner to make money—leaving her feeling uncomfortable, stunned, and awkward despite attempts to deflect or confront him. Additional claims involved non-consensual touching, like patting shoulders or backs despite verbal objections such as “don’t touch me.” Investigators also referenced a voice recording on an employee’s phone containing racial slurs, erratic, and aggressive remarks. Employees further reported that Deck frequently asserted his authority by reminding staff he was “the mayor” and implying he was untouchable.

Although Deck and his attorney, Jeremy Penland, initially declined to attend the hearing citing safety concerns after a reported threat of violence against the mayor and his legal team—which was reported to law enforcement and prompted warnings about heightened security—Penland was present and vigorously opposed the findings. He argued the investigation violated Deck’s due process rights, called the proceedings “ridiculous,” and expressed a desire for a “fair fight” with opportunities to cross-examine witnesses.

The removal motion was set by Councilwoman Rhonda Jacks and seconded by Councilmember Lee Miller. Councilmember Matthew Nave cast the lone dissenting vote, stating he could not in good conscience support removal based on the evidence presented, citing a lack of transparency and unanswered questions that left him unconvinced. No immediate announcement was made regarding next steps or whether Deck intends to legally challenge the decision. Per the Chickamauga City Charter, Mayor Pro Tem Evitte Parrish will assume the role of mayor for the remainder of the term until the next election in 2028.
