TOMMY DECARLO, LEAD SINGER OF ROCK BAND BOSTON, DIES AT AGE 60

Tommy DeCarlo, the lead singer of the rock band Boston since 2008, has died at the age of 60 after a battle with brain cancer. His family confirmed his passing on Monday, March 9, 2026, stating in a social media post that he fought the illness with incredible strength and courage until the very end. DeCarlo was diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2025, following a sudden brain bleed that required emergency craniotomy surgery, during which doctors discovered melanoma masses on his brain and a spot on his lungs; he experienced another brain bleed later, leading to further hospitalization before returning home after Christmas.

A lifelong Boston fan with no prior band experience, DeCarlo was discovered online when Tom Scholz’s wife came across his cover of “Don’t Look Back,” which Scholz initially mistook for a live recording featuring the late original singer Brad Delp due to the striking vocal resemblance. At the time, DeCarlo was working as a Home Depot credit manager, but he joined Boston following Delp’s suicide in 2007—both men tragically passing away on March 9.

Starting with partial setlists on tours alongside vocalists like Michael Sweet and David Victor, DeCarlo quickly transformed into what Scholz called the “ultimate rock and roll frontman,” delivering standout performances that Scholz described as the band’s best ever. He contributed vocals to Boston’s 2013 album *Life, Love & Hope*, toured extensively through 2017—including a 40th anniversary show in Boston—and even formed a band with his son Tommy Jr. Recent plans for new music and a potential 50th anniversary tour were halted by his declining health. A benefit concert had been planned for March 29 to help with his medical expenses.
