USDA ISSUES SALMONELLA PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT FOR MEAT, POULTRY PRODUCTS AND GREAT VALUE FROZEN PIZZAS
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for various meat and poultry products that may be contaminated with Salmonella due to FDA-regulated dry milk powder ingredients used in their production. The issue was identified after the FDA notified FSIS that multiple establishments received the recalled dairy ingredient, and additional downstream products are expected to be identified as the recall progresses. Consumers and retailers are urged to check the FSIS website for the full list of affected products and labels, discard any items they have, or return them to the place of purchase.
No confirmed illnesses have been reported so far. Symptoms of salmonellosis typically include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever appearing within 6 hours to 6 days after consumption, with most people recovering in 4 to 7 days without treatment, though severe cases can require hospitalization, particularly in older adults, infants, and those with weakened immune systems.
The alert specifically includes two Great Value frozen pizzas sold at Walmart: Stuffed Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch and Thin and Crispy Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch. This expands an earlier recall of Aldi’s Mama Cozzi’s frozen breakfast pizzas (Biscuit Crust Sausage and Cheese, and Cooked Pork Belly Crumbles with Bacon, Pepper, and Onion).
Consumers can contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854 or use the online complaint system for questions or to report problems.
