TENNESSEE LAUNCHES SAFETY ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGNS AHEAD OF MEMORIAL DAY

The Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) and the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) are launching two targeted traffic safety enforcement campaigns ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. Beginning May 22, the initiatives—“Protecting Every Mile: 68 Hours of Enforcement on Highway 68” and “58 Hours on Highway 58”—will increase patrols along State Route 68 (107 miles through Cumberland, Rhea, Meigs, McMinn, and Polk counties) and State Route 58 (95 miles through Hamilton, Meigs, and Roane counties) to help reduce traffic fatalities during the busy holiday travel period.

THSO Director Buddy Lewis encouraged drivers to prioritize safety by driving sober, buckling up, avoiding distractions, obeying speed limits, and ensuring vehicles are road-ready. He emphasized planning ahead and staying patient amid expected heavy traffic.

The campaigns will run through midnight on May 26 for Highway 68 and begin 58 hours prior to midnight on Memorial Day for Highway 58, involving local law enforcement and multiple THP districts. Additional safety reminders include obeying all traffic signs and signals, watching for motorcycles and pedestrians, and properly restraining all children on every trip.
