Bear activity has increased recently in local areas (including Baxter and Cookeville), which is normal for this time of year according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). Sightings are expected from now through July.

Residents are advised not to approach bears, attempt to feed them, or call 911 to report sightings.

Younger bears are typically not aggressive, but sows with cubs are more likely to show aggressive behavior. Anyone encountering an aggressive bear should contact a TWRA officer immediately, day or night, using the routine dispatch line at 931-484-9571.
