LAKE LEVELS IN EAST TENNESSEE EXCEPTIONALLY LOW DESPITE RAINFALL

A recent report by WATE says that despite recent rainfall, lake levels in East Tennessee are exceptionally low and projected to decrease further due to historic drought conditions across the region. According to James Everett, the Tennessee Valley Authority’s General Manager of River Management, runoff into the eastern Tennessee Valley is currently the fourth lowest in 152 years of recorded history, with only about half an inch of the 3.5 inches of rain since Memorial Day actually reaching the river system.

Because large portions of the valley are facing severe or extreme drought, the TVA must continue releasing water from dams to maintain water supply and quality for its customers. Consequently, Everett advises lake users to exercise extra caution, as dropping water levels can expose hidden hazards to boats and swimmers. Residents looking to monitor these changes can find real-time updates on the TVA website or through the TVA Lake Info app.
