JOEL WELLES ARRESTED AFTER CHECK FRAUD SCHEME AND VIOLENT STANDOFF WITH MONTEREY POLICE
A Monterey man is behind bars after allegedly attempting to cash a fraudulent check across multiple local businesses and threatening to shoot responding law enforcement officers during a standoff at his home.
The incident unfolded on Friday, July 10, when the Monterey Police Department was alerted that an individual, identified as a Mr. Welles, was attempting to cash a $5,000 check written from his mother-in-law’s closed bank account.
According to police, Welles attempted to pass the bad check at several locations, including One Bank and Builtwell Bank. He also allegedly attempted to use the same fraudulent check to make a large purchase at Landers.
When Monterey police officers arrived at Welles’ residence to question him, he fled inside and slammed the front door. As officers attempted to negotiate with him from outside, Welles yelled through the door, claiming he had a firearm and threatening to “drop” the officers on his porch.
Officers subsequently forced the door open, where a violent struggle ensued. Welles fought all three officers just inside the doorway before being successfully subdued, handcuffed, and taken into custody.
Welles was transported to the Putnam County Jail and booked on charges of Forgery and Resisting Arrest. His total bond has been set at $16,600.
Authorities note that additional local businesses have since come forward reporting similar interactions with Welles.
