TCAT Upper Cumberland has achieved a major milestone in veteran support, becoming the first Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) institution and the first Tennessee College of Applied Technology to earn the prestigious VETS Bravo Campus designation.

The honor, awarded by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC), recognizes higher education institutions that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to military-connected students through specialized career services, peer mentoring, and tailored support initiatives. TCAT Upper Cumberland is only the second campus in the entire state to secure the elevated credential.

The VETS Bravo framework was introduced in July 2024 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Tennessee Veterans Transition Support Act. To qualify for the upgraded status, campuses must meet rigorous standards beyond traditional VETS requirements, including:

• Tailored Career Services: Providing specialized career support focused on translating military experience into civilian workforce opportunities.

• Peer Mentoring: Maintaining a dedicated peer support program for military-connected students for at least one full academic year.

• Dedicated Leadership: Appointing a VETS Bravo Campus Liaison who participates in ongoing professional development.

• Data-Driven Improvements: Actively using annual student veteran survey feedback to enhance campus services.

“TCAT Upper Cumberland’s VETS Bravo designation is a reflection of their welcoming and responsive environment for military-connected students,” said Kathleen Staple, THEC Director of Veteran Initiatives. She noted that the campus excels at helping veterans translate their military skills into meaningful educational and career opportunities across the state.

The announcement coincides with the release of THEC’s latest VETS Campus Report, which shows record engagement among military-connected learners. In Fall 2024, enrollment across Tennessee’s VETS-designated campuses reached a yearly high, serving 6,767 undergraduate student veterans and 6,020 military dependents. Data shows these students are not only enrolling in large numbers but are actively persisting to complete advanced degrees and credentials.

As a VETS Bravo institution, TCAT Upper Cumberland will continue to track and report detailed annual data on military student enrollment, field of study, and degree completion, setting a new benchmark for technical and vocational education in Tennessee.
