Levonn Henry Hubbard, 82

Levonn Henry Hubbard age 82 of Crossville, TN passed away on August 20, 2026. Dr. Hubbard was born December 17, 1943, in Cumberland County the son of Ross and Oma Burgess Hubbard. He graduated from Tennessee Technological University, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. He attended Peabody College at Vanderbilt University for his doctorate, a Ph.D.

Dr. Hubbard was a lifelong educator who began his work in 1964 as a classroom teacher in Cumberland County at Lantana Elementary, followed by two years as a teaching principal at Tabor Elementary.

After serving in several other administrative roles in the Cumberland County school system, he moved to Nashville to work for the Tennessee School Boards Association in 1972. In 1976, he became the Superintendent at Alvin C. York Institute in Jamestown, where he oversaw the construction of a new school building and campus in 1980. Later, he served as Superintendent of Harriman City Schools and in Searcy, Arkansas, where he was appointed by then-Governor Bill Clinton’s Task Force on Volunteers in Public Education.

In 1988, he moved to Hendersonville and rejoined TSBA as the Associate Executive Director, working with each of Tennessee’s 155 school systems. In July of 1992, he was appointed as Director of Schools for Sumner County—the first appointed school chief in 68 years. During his term, Sumner County was the recipient of a TSBA  Award for Excellence in Educational Programs, and Hendersonville High School was named the High School of the Year. Hubbard oversaw the construction of multiple new schools across the county, resulting in smaller classrooms for students and teachers. He retired from public education in 1997 and returned to Cumberland County in 1999, where he lived until his passing.

Dr. Hubbard was well known in Crossville, where he served in a variety of roles for non-profit boards, local government bodies, and other community organizations. To name just a few, his services extended to the Tennessee Trails Association (Plateau Chapter), Tennessee Parks & Greenways Foundation, Cumberland Trail Conservancy, Homestead Tower Association, Friends of the Crossville Trails, Crossville Apple Festival, Meadow Park Lake Commission, Cumberland County Board of Equalization, and Crossville Personnel Board.

Dr. Hubbard received many accolades in his lifetime—too numerous to list here. Some of those included a commendation from the Tennessee State Board of Education for devoting his professional life to public education in Tennessee. The commendation was signed by Gov. Lamar Alexander and heralded Hubbard for his “unselfish dedication” and “exemplary redirection” of York Institute. In 2017, the Cumberland Homestead Tower Association named Hubbard its Volunteer of the Year, and he helped to pioneer the construction of the Soldier’s Beach Trail at Meadow Park Lake.

Dr. Hubbard was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ross and Oma Hubbard, and his older brother, Albert Hubbard. He leaves behind his younger brother, Dennis Hubbard; sons, Nathan (Tracy) Hubbard, David (Kavitha) Hubbard, and Joseph (Emily) Hubbard; and seven grandchildren: Kavya, Luke, Alexander, Catherine, Evelyn, Charlotte, and Eleanor.

Funeral services will be held Monday August 24, 2026 at 2pm at Hood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Monday from 12noon-2pm two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burgess Cemetery.
