Funeral Services for Mertie Walker, age 76, of Monterey, Tennessee, will be conducted on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 12:00 PM from the Chapel of Goff Funeral Home. Rev. Michael Waters and Rev. Tony Barnett will officiate with interment to follow in the Welch Memorial Cemetery.
She was born on Saturday, February 18, 1950, in Monterey, Tennessee, to Loyd Jack Phillips and Reba June Bohannon Phillips. She passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, August 24, 2026, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
On February 10, 1968, Mertie married the love of her life, Frankie Dale Walker. Together they shared a beautiful marriage of 58 years built on faith, devotion, hard work, and unconditional love. For more than five decades, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories while raising their three children: Angela Fay Walker Parker, Rhonda Dell Walker, and Jason Ray Walker.
Mertie was a woman of extraordinary strength, determination, and talent. Throughout her life, she successfully owned and operated several businesses, including a bakery and two restaurants. Her gift for cooking became legendary throughout the community and nowhere was that gift more evident than in her famous homemade biscuits. Family, friends, and neighbors alike looked forward to gathering around her table, knowing they would leave not only with a full stomach, but often with extra biscuits lovingly packed to take home.
While her accomplishments were many, Mertie’s greatest legacy was the love she poured into others. She was a source of wisdom, encouragement, and comfort to all. With an open heart, she welcomed everyone to gather and enjoy a glass of sweet tea on the back porch or a fresh pan of hot biscuits in her kitchen. As her faith guided every aspect of her life, she never met a stranger and had a unique ability to make you feel valued, loved, and cared for.
Above all, Mertie was a devoted follower of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her faith was the foundation upon which she built her life and family. Through every joy, challenge, and trial, she trusted in God’s goodness and grace. In her final days, it was her unwavering faith that gave her strength, comfort, and peace. She often spoke of the Lord’s faithfulness and found reassurance in the promise of eternal life. Her family finds comfort knowing she has been welcomed into the arms of her Savior and is reunited with loved ones who have gone before her.
Mertie is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Dale Walker; her daughter, Rhonda Walker; her son, Jason (Rebecca) Walker; her sisters, Patsy Taylor and Eleanor Thompson; and her treasured grandchildren: Elizabeth (Cody)Thomas, Sabrina (Dustin) Tice, Michael (Hannah) Walker, Leah (Kendall) Pippin, Jordyn Walker, and Jaycee Walker.
She also leaves behind eleven beloved great-grandchildren who brought endless joy to her life: Arial Thomas, Sara Tice, Lakyn Thomas, Declan Thomas, William Tice, Tytus Thomas, Ava Pippin, Lola Tice, Walker Pippin, Lavona Walker, and George Tice, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Mertie was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Angela Fay Walker Parker; her parents, Jack and Reba Phillips; and her brothers, Edward “Ed” Phillips and Loyd F. Phillips.
Mertie will be remembered for her loving heart, her unwavering faith, and her generous spirit. The way she brought people together through both her words and her cooking. The lessons she taught, the love she shared, and the faith she lived will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
Mertie’s life was a testament to faith, love, service, and devotion to family. Though she will be deeply missed, her family rejoices in the knowledge that her journey on earth is complete and that she now rests in the presence of her Lord and Savior.

Her life was a gift, her faith was an inspiration, and her memory will forever be a blessing.
