John Lamar “Vern” Childress, 78

John Lamar “Vern” Childress, age 78, of Harriman, passed away at his home on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 surrounded by his loved ones. Vern was born June 25, 1948 in Harriman and was a lifelong resident of Roane County and worked as a heavy equipment technician at the X-10 and ORNL Nuclear Plants in Oak Ridge. He was the kind of person who was always willing to lend a helping hand, especially when it came to working on machinery with his friends. He took pride in helping others and never hesitated to lend his knowledge and skills whenever they were needed. Vern was a United States Army veteran who proudly served his country during the Vietnam era. He enjoyed fishing and camping. One of his greatest companions was his little dog, Butch, who was much more than a pet—he was Vern’s best friend and was always by his side, including on their fishing and camping adventures. Vern is survived by his son, John Childress and wife, Kelly of Kingston; his grandchildren, Emma Childress of Knoxville, Skylar Haley and husband, Travis of Knoxville, and Ashtin Sockwell of Chattanooga; and his great-grandchildren, Dawson Eagleson and Lillian Rue. He is also survived by many friends and loved ones who will cherish the memories they shared with him. He was preceded in death by his parents, John William Childress and Louise Kinman Childress; two sisters; and one brother. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Poplar Springs Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Roane County Honor Guard. Vern will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, willingness to help others, love of the outdoors, and faithful companion Butch will remain fondly remembered.
