Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti has joined a coalition of 20 state attorneys general in sending a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, warning of a critical national security threat tied to Chinese-sourced pharmaceutical ingredients used in compounded GLP-1 drugs. The officials raised serious concerns that Chinese manufacturers previously linked to fentanyl precursors are now distributing unregulated weight-loss and other peptide products to the United States.

At the center of the coalition’s concerns is an FDA “Green List” established in September 2025, which critics say allows certain suppliers to ship products into the country without standard detention or inspection. The letter highlights a specific incident involving a Chinese company on the Green List, Harbin Jixianglong Biotech Co., which allegedly repackaged and relabeled knock-off semaglutide sourced from an unregistered, non-Green List facility before distributing it to American markets.

Attorney General Skrmetti emphasized the urgent need to secure the nation’s medical borders, stating that foreign suppliers exploiting supply chain loopholes to import adulterated products threaten both public health and national security. Skrmetti joined attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and West Virginia in signing the federal appeal.
