TVA SECURES FEDERAL PERMIT FOR ADVANCED NUCLEAR REACTOR NEAR OAK RIDGE
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has cleared a major regulatory hurdle after receiving federal approval to build an advanced small modular nuclear reactor near Oak Ridge.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) granted TVA a construction permit for a GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300 reactor at the Clinch River Nuclear Site. This marks the first time a U.S. utility has been permitted to build this specific design and represents only the second advanced-reactor construction permit issued nationwide.

Innovative Design: Small modular reactors are engineered to produce up to 300 megawatts of electricity—roughly one-third the output of a traditional nuclear unit.

Factory-Built Efficiency: Major components can be manufactured in factories and shipped to the location, which aims to reduce overall construction time, cost, and complexity.

Strategic Location: The Clinch River site sits adjacent to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a premier hub for nuclear research.
Despite the milestone approval, construction will not begin immediately. TVA noted that an official start date has not been set as the utility continues working with industry partners on responsible cost-sharing agreements.
The permit arrives as Tennessee solidifies its status as a leader in nuclear-energy development. The state is currently exploring a separate Department of Energy program for nuclear fuel-cycle activities, and Fort Campbell has been chosen as the site for an Army advanced microreactor program.
