The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary stay of execution for Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike just hours before her lethal injection was set to take place.

The emergency order came Wednesday morning, halting the 10 a.m. execution schedule. The court intervened to review a procedural motion concerning Pike’s federal habeas relief, noting that the lower district court had incorrectly determined it lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

Pike has been on death row for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville.
