PUTNAM COUNTY ATTORNEY RECEIVES PUBLIC CENSURE FROM TENNESSEE SUPREME COURT BOARD

Putnam County lawyer Stephanie Branam Johnson has been issued a public censure by the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Tennessee Supreme Court, according to an announcement released on September 29, 2026.
The disciplinary action stems from Johnson’s handling of a client representation involving probate proceedings and an order of protection. According to the Board, Johnson failed to notify the client when she transitioned from a private firm to a solo practice while the case was ongoing.
Additionally, after being discharged by the client, Johnson did not respond to requests for an accounting of her fees and failed to cooperate with Disciplinary Counsel during the subsequent investigation.
The Board found that Johnson’s actions violated Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct regarding communication (Rule 1.4), termination of representation (Rule 1.16(d)), and cooperation in disciplinary matters (Rule 8.1(b)).
While a public censure serves as an official rebuke and warning, the Board noted that it does not restrict an attorney’s license to practice law in the state.
