TENNESSEE LAUNCHES ANNUAL WILDLIFE RABIES VACCINATION PROGRAM WITH USDA

The Tennessee Department of Health has partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to launch the state’s annual oral rabies vaccine distribution program starting October 7, 2026.
Aiming to protect humans, pets, and livestock from the fatal virus, low-flying airplanes and helicopters will drop fish-scented vaccine baits across 15 border counties targeting wild raccoons. State Health Commissioner John Dunn emphasized the importance of the collaborative effort, noting that while rabies is deadly once symptoms appear, it is entirely preventable with immediate medical care following an exposure.

Key Details for Residents:

  • Target Areas: Baits will be distributed across Bradley, Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamilton, Johnson, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Polk, Rhea, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington counties.
  • Safety Precautions: The vaccine is safe, but residents should leave intact baits alone or toss them into wooded areas using gloves, a towel, or a plastic bag if they are where children or pets play.
  • Pet Safety: Consuming a single bait will not harm pets, though eating many might cause an upset stomach. Owners should avoid trying to pull a bait directly from a pet’s mouth to prevent bites.
  • Assistance: Each bait features a warning label with a toll-free help number (1-877-722-6725).
