A.G. SKRMETTI ANNOUNCES SETTLEMENT WITH PURDUE PHARMA

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti announced a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family, supported by 55 attorneys general from all eligible U.S. states and territories. The settlement addresses Purdue and the Sacklers’ role in exacerbating the opioid crisis. The Sacklers will lose control of Purdue and their ability to sell opioids in the U.S., with funds distributed over 15 years to support addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery. Tennessee expects to receive over $90 million, with most funds disbursed in the first three years ($1.5 billion from the Sacklers and $900 million from Purdue initially, followed by additional payments). The settlement awaits bankruptcy court approval, with local governments now invited to join. This is the largest settlement with individuals tied to the opioid crisis, bringing Tennessee’s total opioid-related settlements to nearly $1.3 billion.
