ACTOR ERIC DANE PASSES AWAY AT AGE 53
Eric Dane, the acclaimed actor renowned for his charismatic role as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy” from 2006 to 2012 (with a 2021 reprise) and his intense portrayal of Cal Jacobs in “Euphoria”, passed away on Thursday at the age of 53 after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. His death came less than a year after he publicly announced his diagnosis in April 2025. Surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldineβwho were the center of his worldβDane spent his final days in comfort, as shared in a family statement that requested privacy while expressing deep gratitude for the love and support from fans.
Throughout his career, Dane built a devoted following beginning with his breakout on “Grey’s Anatomy”, where his character’s death in a plane crash led to the hospital being renamed Grey Sloan Memorial. He later starred as Captain Tom Chandler in “The Last Ship” and took on darker roles in “Euphoria”.
After revealing his ALS diagnosisβa progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness and typically a life expectancy of three to five yearsβDane transformed personal hardship into advocacy. He spoke publicly, including at a Washington news conference on health insurance issues, and was honored as the ALS Network’s Advocate of the Year in September 2025 for his efforts to raise awareness and support research.
Born on November 9, 1972, in Northern California, Dane overcame early tragedy, including the loss of his father at age 7, before moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting. His early credits included guest spots on shows like “Saved by the Bell” and “Charmed”, paving the way for major success. A memoir titled “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments”, set for release in late 2026 by Maria Shriver’s imprint The Open Field, will reflect on pivotal life experiencesβfrom his “Grey’s Anatomy” beginnings and fatherhood to his ALS journeyβaiming to inspire readers about living fully with heart.
Dane is survived by Gayheart, with whom he shared a complex but enduring familial bond despite past separations, and their two teenage daughters. His legacy endures through his impactful performances, advocacy, and the profound outpouring of affection from those he touched.
