AJINOMOTO RECALLS OVER 36 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD DUE TO GLASS CONTAMINATION

On March 3, 2026, Ajinomoto Foods North America, Inc., based in Portland, Oregon, announced a significant expansion of its earlier recall from February 19, 2026, involving frozen chicken products potentially contaminated with glass fragments. This expansion adds approximately 33.6 million pounds of various ready-to-eat (RTE) and not-ready-to-eat (NRTE) items, bringing the total recalled weight to nearly 37 million pounds (specifically 36,987,575 pounds).

The affected products include chicken and pork fried rice, ramen, and shu mai dumpling varieties produced between October 21, 2024, and February 26, 2026, under popular brand names such as Ajinomoto, Kroger, Ling Ling, Tai Pei, and Trader Joe’s, with best-by dates ranging from February 28, 2026, to August 19, 2027. These items, bearing establishment numbers P-18356, P-18356B, or P-47971 within the USDA mark of inspection, were distributed nationwide to retail locations, with some Ajinomoto products also exported to Canada and Mexico.

The contamination issue came to light after the company received multiple consumer complaints about glass found in the products. Further investigation revealed that a vegetable ingredientβ€”specifically carrotsβ€”was the likely source of the glass fragments, which affected the additional items included in this expanded recall. No confirmed injuries or illnesses from consuming these products have been reported to date, though consumers are advised to consult a healthcare provider if concerned about potential harm.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) urges anyone who has purchased these frozen items not to eat them; instead, they should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a refund. Some products may still be in consumers’ or retailers’ freezers. FSIS is conducting effectiveness checks to ensure the recall is properly implemented, and retail distribution lists will be posted on the FSIS website when available.
