BEAR EUTHANIZED AFTER SCAVENGING ON HUMAN REMAINS IN NATIONAL PARK

Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers had to euthanize a bear after finding it scavenging on human remains near Hazel Creek Trail and Backcountry Campsite 82 yesterday. Backpackers came across the remains and the bear and left the scene to get cell phone coverage to report it. When staff arrived, they confirmed finding what was left of a deceased adult male. Authorities are working to notify next of kin and the cause of death is unknown. His identity has not been released as of early afternoon today. Back Country Campsite 82 and Hazel Creek Trail will remain closed until further notice between the juncture with Cold Springs Gap Trail and Welch Ridge Trail.
