BEEF PRICES SURGE AHEAD OF LABOR DAY

WVLT reports that beef prices have surged over 10% since last summer, driven by import restrictions and international trade challenges, according to local cattle farmers and butchers. Ben Neale, a Spring Hill cattle farmer and owner of Light Hill Meats, explains that U.S. ground beef production relies on a mix of domestic fat and lean imported trim, often from live cattle imported from Mexico, to stabilize prices.
However, tariffs and concerns over livestock diseases like screw worm have disrupted these imports, causing ground beef prices to rise by as much as $2 per pound. Neale, who raises and slaughters his own cattle, has largely avoided price hikes at his shop. He notes that market fluctuations are cyclical and suggests consumers connect with local butchers to find more affordable cuts or alternatives while the market stabilizes.
