BILL PROPOSED TO BAN LAW ENFORCEMENT FROM CONCEALING IDENTITIES

A Tennessee bill, the “Stop American Gestapo Act,” proposed by Rep. Justin Jones (D-Nashville), aims to ban law enforcement from wearing masks to conceal their identities and requires visible identification on uniforms. Prompted by ICE roundups involving masked, plain-clothed agents, the bill addresses concerns about distinguishing legitimate agents from impostors, who may commit crimes like kidnapping or assault.

Advocates, including Metro Nashville Councilmember Zulfat Suara, highlight fears in immigrant communities and risks to public safety, citing incidents like a Memphis food truck raid. Conversely, some Republicans, like Sen. Marsha Blackburn, support protecting agents’ identities to shield them from threats.

Jones argues anonymity undermines accountability and hopes for bipartisan support, framing it as a public safety issue. The Tennessee legislative session resumes in January.
