BILL REQUIRING CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS IN DAYCARES IN TENNESSEE HEADING FOR GOVERNORS SIGNATURE

A bill that requires Tennessee daycares to install carbon monoxide detectors has passed both the state House and Senate. The bill awaits the signature of Governor Bill Lee.

State Bill 2066 and House Bill 1969, introduced in the Tennessee Senate and House by Senator Paul Bailey and State Representative Darren Jernigan, require the Tennessee Department of Human Services to require the installation of an approved carbon monoxide alarm in childcare facilities across the state.

The alarms must be installed in every room in which child care is provided by September 30, 2024.

New child care centers that begin operating on or after July 1, 2024, are required to have their alarms installed before the first day child care is provided.

Violating the law is considered a Class C misdemeanor for each day alarms are not installed.
