BLOUNT DEPUTIES AND T.H.P. TEAM UP TO REDUCE HIGHWAY 129 CRASHES

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — The Blount County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are joining forces in an effort to reduce crashes and save lives on The Dragon, one of the most scenic — and dangerous — stretches of highway in the state.
The Dragon’s sharp curves and mountain views make it a popular route for motorcyclists and car enthusiasts across the country. But as the weather warms up, so do the risks.
Crashes increase significantly in summer, often tied to excessive speed, distracted driving and vehicles that should not be traveling the narrow road — including large commercial trucks, which are prohibited.
Last year, there were 112 crashes involving 139 vehicles on the 11 mile stretch of US Hwy 129 known as The Dragon, resulting in 47 injuries and 5 fatalities. Officials are urging drivers and riders to be alert, and stay within posted speed limits and respect the roadway’s limits. So far this year, BCSO and THP have worked 30 crashes involving 13 people injured.
“What starts out as a beautiful drive or a fun afternoon ride can turn into a tragedy,” said Blount County Sheriff James Berrong. “We’ve seen too many people leave here in an ambulance — or worse. That’s why we’re putting extra focus on safety this summer.”
The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Blount County Sheriff’s Office will increase patrols on The Dragon and other routes in the area as part of the summer safety initiative.
“The Dragon is a destination for a lot of people, but it’s still a public road,” said Capt. Eric Miller of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. “We’ll be out there — not just enforcing the law, but reminding people to slow down, wear protective gear and respect the road.”
Officials are also reminding drivers that commercial vehicles are prohibited on this stretch of U.S. 129. Violations can carry fines and increase the risk of serious crashes on a road not designed for large trucks.
Please, slow down, stay alert, and ride like your life depends on it, because it does.
