BOE CLARIFIES BILLY STEPP WAS NOT FIRED BUT THAT HE WAS NOT ‘REHIRED’ AS DOS
Local news publication Crossville News First issued a correction today after recent backlash over a headline that stated that Cumberland County Director of Schools Billy Stepp was fired during last night’s Board of Education meeting rather than a simple vote to not renew his contract.
Board of Education member Jon Matthews shed light on the issue saying that Stepp’s contract as Director of Schools was not renewed but it did not mean he would not be able to do something else in the school system such as teaching, coaching, or directing the band. Had Stepp been fired, he would not have even needed to show up for work that day.
Stepp’s contract ends in June.
Crossville News First issued an apology for publishing an incorrect headline, saying a more appropriate headline would have been “Board of Education votes to not rehire Stepp”.
