CLEAN UP EFFORTS ON I-40 MAY IMPACT TRAFFIC
The eastbound right shoulder of I-40 remains closed near mile marker 341 in Roane County, near Rockwood, for ongoing cleanup following a multi-vehicle crash in January.
The incident involved an overturned tractor-trailer that spilled debris—including rolls of paper and solar panels—across the roadway, initially closing the full eastbound interstate and causing major backups with diversions starting near mile marker 338.
While the main lanes reopened after extensive work by Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) crews, residual cleanup has shifted to the right shoulder.
Drivers should exercise caution, reduce speed due to potential workers or equipment, and check TDOT’s SmartWay app or site for real-time updates, as the shoulder closure may cause minor delays or narrowed conditions until fully cleared.
