COOKEVILLE POLICE ISSUES ALERT ABOUT FAKE DMV TEXT MESSAGES

From the Cookeville Police Department:
🚨SCAM ALERT: Fake DMV Text Messages🚨
We want to warn the public about a widespread text message scam impersonating the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). See the photo below for an example of what the scam text message may look like.
These messages often contain a link that looks official, but do NOT click it. These are phishing attempts designed to steal your personal information, financial data, or infect your device.
Key points to remember:
🔵The DMV will not ask for personal information via text message.
🔵Never click on links from unknown or unexpected sources.
🔵If you’re unsure, contact the DMV directly through their official website or phone number.
What to do if you get one:
🔴Do not respond.
🔴Do not click on any links.
🔴Report the message by forwarding it to 7726 (SPAM).
🔴Consider filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
🔴Spread the word! Tell your friends, family, and neighbors, especially older adults who are often targeted.
Stay alert. Stay safe. And remember: if it smells phishy, it probably is.
