“COUNTRY HOUSE” PROCLAIMED KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER AFTER ORIGINAL WINNER DISQUALIFIED
In a historic moment during Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, the proclaimed winner, Maximum Security, was afterward disqualified for interference. It was the first winner disqualified in the history of the 145-year-old race. After an agonizing wait, the 65-1 shot, Country House, was instead proclaimed the winner, garnering the second-highest payout in the derby’s history. Maximum Security’s owner, Gary West, indicated that he may appeal the race’s outcome. Since his horse was dropped to 17th place out of 19 horses, there would be no payout. According to the complaints raised, Maximum Security ducked out in the final turn and forced several horses to steady, causing them to slow or stop abruptly.
