CPSC ISSUES CRITICAL FIREWORKS SAFETY WARNING AHEAD OF JULY 4TH
As millions of Americans prepare to gather for the nation’s historic 250th Independence Day, federal safety officials are urging the public to exercise extreme caution during fireworks celebrations.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a stark reminder that while fireworks are a deeply rooted tradition, they continue to pose severe risks when misused or manufactured improperly.
According to newly released data from the CPSC, fireworks misuse and malfunctions led to at least 15 deaths and an estimated 13,000 emergency room-treated injuries in 2025.
The data highlighted several troubling trends:
-
High-Risk Age Group: Young adults aged 15 to 24 accounted for the largest share of injuries.
-
Common Trauma: Burns to the hands, fingers, and head were the most frequent injuries reported.
-
Sparkler Danger: Despite being viewed as a child-friendly option, sparklers alone caused roughly 1,300 injuries. Sparklers burn at temperatures above 2,000°F—hot enough to melt certain metals.
-
Primary Causes: The most severe incidents involved devices tipping over, malfunctioning, or being ignited too close to bystanders.
“For 250 years, Americans have celebrated our nation’s independence with family, friends, and fireworks,” said Acting CPSC Chairman Peter A. Feldman. “As we mark this historic milestone, enjoy the celebration, use common sense, and treat fireworks with the respect they deserve.”
To prevent further tragedies, the CPSC is advising consumers to follow these essential safety steps:
-
Leave it to the Pros: The safest way to celebrate is to attend public, professionally managed fireworks displays.
-
Buy Legal: Only purchase consumer fireworks from reputable retailers. Never use homemade, altered, or illegal explosives.
-
Supervise Children: Keep children away from all fireworks, including sparklers.
-
Stay Prepared & Sober: Always keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby, and never operate fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
-
Light Responsibly: Light only one firework at a time, move away quickly, and never lean over a device while lighting it.
-
Never Relight Duds: If a firework fails to ignite, wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it thoroughly in water before discarding it.
The CPSC is actively tracking dangerous merchandise. Consumers who encounter mislabeled, toy-like, or malfunctioning fireworks are urged to report them at SaferProducts.gov to assist with federal enforcement actions and protect the public.
