CREWS RESPOND TO THREE SEVIER COUNTY WILDFIRES

SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – Crews from several agencies responded to three wildfires in Sevier County Wednesday night, and many of those crews were still on the scene Thursday morning and afternoon.

This is a breakdown of each fire:

Walden’s Creek near Shagbark Gated Resort

  • Estimated to be 81 acres and 100% contained, per Sevier County Emergency Management Agency
  • Started by trees falling on power lines, per the Walden’s Creek Fire Department
Cresswell Road near East Union Valley
  • 8.5 acres and 100% contained
  • Crews on-site monitoring and extinguishing hotspots

Flat Branch Road near the Spur

  • Five acres and 100% contained
  • Estimated to be four acres, per Sevier County Fire and Rescue
The fires have also prompted evacuation notices, many of which are still in place. Specifically, the Walden’s Creek fire prompted around 30 structure evacuations, many in the Shagbark resort itself. Sevier County Fire and Rescue also said the Sevier County Electric System had paused power service to the community.

The latest troubles crews are facing are around 50 mph wind gusts and a lack of humidity. We spoke with Seymour Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Linsenbigler, who said the firefights could last days.

On top of those challenges, Walden’s Creek Fire Department Chief Tim Baker said crews were also dealing with “steep and treacherous” terrain.

Because of the intense response, Sevier County Fire and Rescue officials said, the Sevier County Emergency Management Agency activated their Emergency Operations Center at “Level Two.”

Looking ahead, the county is under a wind advisory, which is set to expire at around 1 p.m. on Thursday. County officials have also placed the area under an “Elevated Fire Danger” warning.

Those in Sevier County can help the efforts. Crews have asked people to avoid the burning areas and refrain from starting any fires themselves; no burn permits are available in Sevier County.
