CROSSVILLE MAN ARRESTED IN DUI HOMICIDE IN KENTUCKY

COLUMBIA, Ky. (WSMV) – Two Tennessee men were arrested after a crash killed a 2nd grader and injured four others in Adair County, according to the Kentucky State Police (KSP).
KSP said the two-vehicle crash happened in Columbia at the intersection of KY 55 Bypass and Pelham Branch Road on Sunday at around 4:30 p.m.
The preliminary investigation into the collision showed a Ford F150 being driven by 46-year-old Joel Hammack, of Crossville, TN, was driving down the KY 55 Bypass at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended a slower-moving Kia Sorento being driven by 32-year-old Townya Ritzie, of Columbia, KY.
KSP said the force of the collision sent Ritzie’s vehicle off the roadway where it then overturned.
A child passenger in Ritzie’s car was pronounced dead at the scene. WSMV’s sister station WBKO reported that the Adair County Coroner’s Office identified the juvenile as Rose Morgan, a 2nd grader at Adair County Primary Center.
Two other passengers in Ritizie’s car, identified as 66-year-old Susan Morgan, of Columbia, and another juvenile, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Ritzie and another juvenile were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
KSP said Hammack and 45-year-old Walter Nichols, of Bean Station, TN, who was a passenger in Hammock’s vehicle, were treated and released.
Hammack was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide under the influence of alcohol, DUI 4th offense or greater, first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault.
Police said when emergency personnel arrived at the crash scene, Nichols acted “unruly” as they tried to help those injured in the crash.
Nichols was arrested and is facing multiple charges, including third-degree assault (EMS, fire, rescue squad), fourth-degree assault (minor injury), terroristic threatening, disorderly conduct and alcohol intoxication in a public place.
Both men are being held at the Adair County Detention Center.
Troopers on scene were assisted by the Adair County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia Police Department, Columbia Fire and Rescue and the Adair County Coroner’s Office.
The crash is actively being investigated by Senior Trooper Weston Sullivan.
