CROSSVILLE PD RESPONDS TO POSSIBLE PAVING SCAM

On Thursday last week, Crossville Police units were dispatched to AJ’s diner for a possible scam report. Officer Justin Farmer spoke with the manager of AJ’s diner who said she was approached by a man who wanted to speak to her about some potholes and other issues in the parking lot.
The manager let Officer Farmer read messages of the conversation they had. The man told the manager that he had just finished paving another business and had some asphalt left over. Saying he normally charges $14 per square foot but will give her a deal of $6 per square foot.
In the messages, he said he would have been at the restaurant at approximately 3:00 p.m. However, the manager said she waited well past that time and asked for an estimate multiple times with no answer. After she believed that he wasn’t coming, she went home.
She was contacted later and the man said he was just about done with the project and had done over 950 square feet. He then surprised her with a bill of $5,700.
The woman said she had not wanted him to start until after he had given her an estimate, but he responded that he could not give an estimate because he did not know how much of the mix he was going to use.
The manager then stated she was going to be speaking with her lawyer and any future discussion could be done through him.
Officer Farmer contacted the man, got his information, and asked him what had happened. However, the story he told the officer contradicted what he told the manager. Saying that he was charging 900 square feet for $6 per square foot and that he normally charged $8 to $10 per square foot totaling $5,400.
Currently, no charges have been placed and no arrest has been made.
