CUMBERLAND COUNTY DEPUTY RESPONDS TO PUPPY SCAM

On Friday last week at around 4:00 p.m., dispatch sent Deputy Aidyn Smith a name and phone number regarding a scam. The complainant claimed that a man had scammed him out of $150.

The victim agreed to buy a puppy from the alleged scammer and sent him $150 on the 7th via CashApp. The victim emailed the deputy 16 images proving the conversation had with the man on Facebook Messenger as well as a conversation via text message.

The alleged scammer falsely claimed he would meet with the victim in Georgia multiple times, and never showed up. After the victim attempted to meet the alleged scammer numerous times from the 13th to the 26th, the alleged scammer messaged James saying “I’m going to send you your money back this evening.” The victim waited 24 hours and hadn’t received a refund.

As of the 28th, the victim has still not received his refund.
