The Cumberland County Board of Education used its Sept. 17, 2026, work session to schedule a dedicated retreat next month centered on middle school issues, following recent community input meetings and ongoing discussions about projected timelines and potential restructuring.

Director of Schools Dr. Farley told the board that feedback from the community comment meetings would be compiled in October, with a full review planned for November. She proposed holding a retreat focused exclusively on middle school discussions, building on the successful multi-session format used last year.

After reviewing scheduling conflicts around the Tennessee School Boards Association convention and other commitments, members agreed on a single retreat date of Nov. 17, 2026, from 4:15 to 7 p.m. The location will be determined and announced later; as in past years, the session will be open to the public but held off-site from the usual board meeting room.

Board members noted the importance of addressing middle school questions carefully, especially in light of broader conversations about school capacity, zoning, and how students are currently placed. One member emphasized that clarity on enrollment and transfers will be particularly critical “especially right now when we’re talking splitting the middle schools and how we’re going to do it, what it’s going to look like.”

Farley indicated the November retreat would serve as a starting point. If needed, additional sessions could follow to continue middle school planning before the board revisits other long-term items, such as updates to the district’s strategic plan.

The board also confirmed related calendar adjustments, including moving the October work session to Oct. 22 to accommodate fall break, but the primary focus of the session’s scheduling discussion remained the upcoming middle school retreat.
