DANGEROUS HEAT HOLDS ON BEFORE A COOLER LABOR DAY
The heat remains the big weather story Thursday across the Cumberland Plateau and Tennessee Valley, with a Heat Advisory in effect. Sunshine will push the high to around 94 on the plateau, where the heat index could reach 99. The Tennessee Valley will be even hotter, with a high near 97 and a heat index around 103. Thursday night stays mostly clear and warm, with lows in the lower to middle 70s.
Friday brings another hot day, especially in the Tennessee Valley, where the high reaches around 97 with a heat index as high as 104. The Cumberland Plateau will be near 93, with a small chance for an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. A few storms are possible Saturday afternoon in both regions, with severe storms possible in the Tennessee Valley. Otherwise, sunshine remains plentiful, with highs around 91 on the plateau and 95 in the valley.
Temperatures finally begin backing off Sunday and Labor Day. Sunday stays sunny with highs in the upper 80s on the Cumberland Plateau and lower 90s in the Tennessee Valley. Labor Day brings a 30 percent chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms in both regions, along with noticeably lower temperatures. Highs will reach the middle 80s on the plateau and upper 80s in the valley.
