DEATH TOLL FROM PUTNAM COUNTY TORNADO NOW AT 16

(DEVELOPING STORY as of 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2020)

Putnam County officials say as of 10 a.m. this morning, 16 people died in an early morning tornado that hit between Baxter and Cookeville. At least 65 were injured and treated at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Officials say both numbers could climb as crews continue their rescue efforts.

The tornado touched down near Highway 70 near Baxter and traveled to just before Willow Avenue in Cookeville. The hardest hit areas of Putnam County include Charleton Square, Plunk Whitson, Echo Valley, Prosperity Point, North Mcbroom Chapel, and Double Springs Utility District.
