TDOT crews worked overnight Tuesday and into this morning on repairs to a concrete barrier on Interstate 75 South that collapsed onto Interstate 24 West below on Monday.

Meanwhile, the condition of the driver who collided with that collapsed barrier has now been upgraded to fair at a local hospital. The collision occurred as he was merging onto I-24 westbound. Earlier in the week he had been reported in critical condition.

TDOT’s chief engineer says investigators now believe a truck carrying an oversize load struck the underside of the overpass, leading to the collapse.

TDOT expects the repairs – which are fully weather dependent – to last two weeks, with work going on 20 hours per day. It commenced at 8 p.m. and continued until 6 a.m. After a pause during morning rush hour, crews resumed working at 10 a.m.

During repairs to the I-75 South bridge, the ramp to I-24 West beneath the bridge will be restricted to one lane, for the safety of drivers along that stretch of roadway.

Drivers are urged to seek alternate routes during this repair work. Those drivers who must travel along this stretch of road are urged to be patient during slowdowns and to watch for workers and equipment.
