FAIRFIELD GLADE MAN FALLS FOR MCAFEE SCAM; LOSES $4,500

On Dec. 9th, a 73-year-old man stopped by the Fairfield Glade Police Department to report a scam. He said that on Dec. 6th he received an email from McAfee Antivirus stating he needed to renew his subscription. The email stated he would have to pay $669.80 to renew his service.

He clicked on the button that was on the email and a page popped up requesting his account information. The amount that was showing on the page was not accurate, showing $6,698.00.

He called the number on the email that connected him to a man claiming to be a manager with McAfee. The name the man gave him was Gabriel William, and he told Gabriel what happened and Gabriel told him the mistake couldn’t be fixed on McAfee’s side.

Gabriel stated to get the money into his account they had to access his account, which they did. The victim said they convinced him he needed to buy gift cards for him to get his refund.

He said he was out $4,500.00 in total from the combined gift cards he purchased and the money from his bank account. He purchased a total of 9 cards from Lowes and Food City.

The victim said he is aware he will not be getting his money back but wanted to report it to make us aware of this incident. He notified his bank of the incident and they advised him they would not be able to get his money back.
