FASHION DESIGNER GIORGIO ARMANI DIES AT 91

Giorgio Armani, the iconic Italian designer who revolutionized fashion, passed away at 91, as confirmed by his fashion house.

Born in 1934 in Piacenza, Armani transitioned from aspiring doctor to fashion visionary after a job as a window decorator in Milan. In 1975, he and partner Sergio Galeotti launched their menswear label with a groundbreaking unlined sports jacket, followed by womenswear and the revolutionary “power suit” for women in the 1980s.

His relaxed silhouettes, crafted with soft fabrics and muted tones, became a global sensation, dressing Hollywood stars and executives alike, with notable appearances in films like *American Gigolo* and on red carpets. Armani’s empire, valued at over $10 billion, expanded beyond clothing to include accessories, perfumes, cosmetics, home furnishings, restaurants, hotels, and even a basketball team.

Known for his minimalist aesthetic and practical designs, Armani built a legacy with over 600 stores and 9,000 employees worldwide. A private man with a disarming smile, he remained his own boss, earning the nickname “Re Giorgio” in Italy. Armani’s influence extended to philanthropy, including support for AIDS causes and a U.N. goodwill ambassador role.

He is survived by his niece Roberta, a key figure in his company, with succession plans pointing to longtime associates Leo Dell’Orco and Silvana Armani.
