FIREWORKS TRAILER FIRE ON I-75 LEADS TO INVESTIGATION

A fireworks trailer fire on Interstate 75 in Tennessee led to a post-incident inspection by the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, uncovering multiple serious hazardous materials violations. The incident, which sent fireworks exploding in all directions, involved a shipment driven by Dalton Beeler from South Pittsburg to Knox County.

The inspection revealed that the carrier was transporting fireworks without required federal safety measures, including no current hazardous materials registration, no emergency response information, no shipping papers, no placards identifying the cargo, no USDOT number when required, and the driver lacked the necessary hazardous materials endorsement. The driver was cited for the missing endorsement, and the findings have been referred to regulatory authorities for further review and potential federal penalties.

Col. Matt Perry, commander of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, noted that while the event resembled a fireworks show, it highlighted significant safety risks, stressing that hazmat regulations protect the public and first responders. The THP works with agencies like the FMCSA, CVSA, and PHMSA to ensure safe transportation of hazardous materials on state highways, as proper documentation and placarding are critical for emergency responders to identify hazards and act safely.
