A joint investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office and the Smithville City Police Department has led to the indictment of Megan Mosley, the former treasurer of the DeKalb County Band Boosters.

Mosley was indicted by the DeKalb County Grand Jury in August 2026 on one count of theft over $10,000 and three counts of forgery following the discovery of financial discrepancies reported by school officials.

Key Findings of the Investigation

• Embezzlement Total: Investigators determined Mosley misappropriated at least $48,650.42 between 2021 and 2025 from the organization, which supported the high school’s Fighting Tiger Marching Band.

• Venmo Transfers: A total of $44,821.92 was transferred directly from the booster club’s Venmo account to Mosley’s personal bank account or a family member’s account. Mosley later repaid $10,320.08, leaving an unrecovered balance of $34,501.84.

• Diverted Dues and Fundraisers: Mosley diverted at least $3,828.50, including un-deposited Venmo collections and proceeds from a band car wash that generated at least $1,300 but yielded only a $15 deposit.

• Falsified Reports: Investigators revealed that Mosley submitted false financial statements to the board by inflating the organization’s actual bank balances.

• Questionable Disbursements: An additional $74,040.97 in expenditures lacked necessary documentation, such as receipts and invoices, preventing verification of whether the funds benefited the band program.

“Booster club officers are entrusted with funds raised by students, parents, and the community,” stated Comptroller Mumpower. “Maintaining accurate records, properly separating financial duties, and providing meaningful oversight are essential to protecting those funds and ensuring they are used to benefit students.”

The DeKalb County Band Boosters was formally dissolved on December 18, 2025.
