Jackson County 3rd grader has earned the title of ‘hero’.

Braylon Ledbetter’s heroic act to successfully perform CPR saved his grandmother’s life.

“So, I was in my bedroom, and I heard this noise,” Braylon said. “I ran in, and she was holding her chest and was on the chair. Then, I grabbed the phone. My grandpa could not find the phone, so I gave him the phone.”

Braylon said after calling 9-11, he stepped outside and tried to flag down the ambulance to their home. While waiting for assistance, Ledbetter started conducting CPR while talking to 9-11 operators and was credited with saving a life.

“He (Grandfather) said what did they say?” Braylon said. “And I said CPR, and he said I don’t know how to do that and I said chest compressions because they couldn’t do the mouth to mouth because the mouth was shut closed.”

Braylon said he was in shock throughout the situation but remembered to calm down and take a deep breath. Ledbetter said he has never performed CPR but knew the basics from YouTube videos.

“I just felt so proud and happy that my grandma is still alive,” Braylon said. Braylon later received a Certificate of Heroism from State Representative John Mark Windle for his actions.

Braylon said his family is now getting his certificate framed to remember the heroic actions.
