Jimmie Houston Whittenbarger, 84

Fraker – Jimmie Houston Whittenbarger, 84, was born July 9, 1940, to Raymond Grant Whittenbarger and Mary Frances Vann Whittenbarger. He was born at home, one of six children. Preceded in death by his father, Raymond Grant Whittenbarger; mother, Mary Frances Van Whittenbarger; sister, Lois Geneva Whittenbarger McCullough; brother, Warren Thomas Whittenbarger; brother, Sherman Allen Whittenbarger; and brother, Donald Whittenbarger. Jim is survived by his wife, Marsha Sidwell Whittenbarger; daughter Wendy Jill Whittenbarger; daughter Amy Melanie Whittenbarger Carter; spouse John Carter; son Jimmie Houston Whittenbarger II; and brother Stanley Eugene Whittenbarger. Also survived by three precious grandchildren: Zachary M. Carter, Logan T. Carter, and EmmaKay Ann Carter.

Jim was an educator for over 35 years and an ordained minister, and he loved to serve his Lord in many different capacities. He enjoyed doing pulpit supply for many different area churches for over 30 years. He served as deacon, Sunday School Director and teacher, Church Training Director, bus ministry, and pulpit supply when needed at South Harriman Baptist Church, where he was a member. He graduated from South Harriman High School in 1959 and served in the military from 1959 to 1963, spending 18 months in Wonju, South Korea. After an honorable discharge, he attended Tennessee Technological University and later the University of Tennessee Knoxville to complete his master’s degree in school administration. Jim served on the United Tennessee League Board of Directors for many years. He also coauthored a book titled “Valley of Challenge and Change: The History of Roane County, Tennessee, 1860-1900.” He was principal and administrator at Midtown Elementary School from 1972 to 1996.

Jim enjoyed many different hobbies, such as woodworking, staining leaded glass, blacksmithing, stone masonry, and genealogy. Jim most enjoyed studying, teaching, and sharing God’s Word.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family will receive friends 9:00 am – 9:45 am, Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Fraker Funeral Home with funeral service at 9:45. Interment will follow at Roane Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South Harriman Baptist Church.
