JURORS TO BEGIN DELIBERATION IN CASE OF RACIST ANTIOCH CHURCH SHOOTER

Jurors heard closing arguments in Davidson County Criminal Court this afternoon, after which Judge Cheryl Blackburn issued instructions before sending them to deliberate the fate of Emanuel Samson. Samson, who is black, is accused of shooting up the predominantly white Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in 2017, killing one woman and injuring several other churchgoers.

On Monday, at the start of his trial, Samson entered a plea of not guilty on all charges against him. Prosecutors are seeking life in prison for Samson, without the possibility of parole.

Samson testified Wednesday, claiming he didn’t remember shooting anyone, and the first thing he remembered was shooting himself in the church. He also detailed his hallucinations and manic thoughts leading up to that day.

A psychiatrist diagnosed Samson last month with multiple mental illnesses.
