KENTUCKY HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS MOVES STARTING DATE FOR BASKETBALL TO JANUARY 4, 2021

Could this be a preview of what the TSSAA (Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association) may do soon?

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Board of Control voted unanimously this afternoon to move the start date for the regular high school basketball season to January 4, 2021. Games were originally scheduled to begin this coming Monday, November 23, 2020. Here’s the new high school basketball schedule:

December 14, 2020 – Basketball practice starts

January 4, 2021 – Regular season starts

March 1, 2021 – District tournaments start

March 8, 2021 – Regional tournaments start

March 17-21/March 24-28, 2021 – Sweet 16 dates (tentative)

The board can revise any of these changes based on what happens with the coronavirus in the coming weeks and months. With this revised calendar, spring sports would begin the week of April 5, 2020.

As for football, the KHSAA will allow the playoffs to begin as schedule this weekend. Teams that have to withdraw in the semifinals or finals will be replaced by the team they defeated in the previous round.

In Tennessee, high school basketball teams are currently taking part in pre-season tournament. The TSSAA could make a special announcement soon as the COVID-19 cases continue to spike in the state.

If you recall, the TSSAA stopped the state high school basketball tournament early this year when the COVID-19 outbreak first took off.
