KNOXVILLE JOHN DOE IDENTIFIED AS JAMES ROBERT BENSON AFTER 38 YEARS

The remains of a man discovered on August 30, 1988, by railway workers in Knoxville’s Coster Rail Yard have finally been identified after more than three decades. Forensic anthropologists initially determined the victim was a white male aged approximately 21 to 30, and his death was ruled a homicide. Despite efforts by the Knoxville Police Department and the Knox County Regional Forensic Center using contemporary methods, the individual was classified as a John Doe when leads were exhausted.
Over the years, a DNA profile was developed by the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center, entered into databases like CODIS and NamUs, but no matches emerged. In May 2023, under the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Unidentified Human Remains DNA Initiative, a sample was sent to the private Texas-based lab Othram for advanced forensic genealogical DNA testing. This process identified potential relatives, and in February 2026, a familial DNA sample from a contacted family member was compared, confirming the remains as those of James Robert Benson, born September 11, 1965, and originally from the Knoxville area.
Benson was last seen near the end of March 1988. Authorities from the Knoxville Police Department, Knox County Regional Forensic Center, and TBI are continuing the homicide investigation and are seeking public assistance, particularly from anyone who may know about individuals Benson was with before his death; tips can be directed to the KPD Homicide Unit at 865-215-7275.
The TBI highlighted the collaborative effort in resolving this long-standing mystery through modern DNA technology.
