LANDSLIDE IN NORTH ANDERSON COUNTY CLOSES SR 116

Heavy rains in north Anderson County Wednesday caused a landslide that collapsed a section of hillside along and beneath State Route 116 (New River Highway), the Tennessee Department of Transportation said.

TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi said there is no timeline for how long the road might be closed, but he expects it will be a long-term closure.

One lane of the roadway reopened this morning.

State Route 116 runs through the mountains in north Anderson County. It starts at Frost Bottom Road/Briceville Highway northeast of Oliver Springs, continues northwest to the Rosedale/New River area and southwest to Petros.

Wednesday’s heavy rains also caused flooding on multiple roads in Anderson County; another landslide was reported near Clinton High School.

According to Director of Schools Tim Parrott, schools there were closed Thursday and Friday because of flooding and an increase in the number of illnesses.
