LANE CLOSURES AND BRIDGE WORK CAUSE TRAFFIC DELAYS ON INTERSTATE 40 IN ROANE AND CUMBERLAND COUNTIES
Motorists traveling along Interstate 40 through Roane and Cumberland counties should prepare for slowdowns today and over the coming weeks as state crews and contractors conduct critical bridge inspections, road repairs, and structural maintenance.
Immediate Impacts: Lane Closures Today
Drivers on both directions of I-40 face single-lane closures throughout Wednesday, October 14:
-
I-40 Westbound (Roane County – MM 353): A bridge inspection reported Wednesday morning has blocked the right lane and right shoulder near Mile Marker 353.

-
I-40 Eastbound (Cumberland County – MM 327): A bridge repair operation reported early Wednesday has closed the right lane and shoulder.
-
I-40 Eastbound (Cumberland County – MM 327): Crews are also performing pothole repairs near Mile Marker 327. The right lane and right shoulder remain blocked, with work expected to wrap up by 2:30 PM CT. Drivers are urged to reduce speed in this area.

Multi-Week Bridge Project Near Crab Orchard
In addition to today’s repairs, a major bridge rehabilitation project is underway near Crab Orchard (Mile Marker 328.2) and will impact traffic through Saturday, October 31.
Contractors are currently repairing the I-40 bridges over Main Street. While much of the work is occurring underneath the interstate, local drivers on Main Street will experience single-lane closures governed by temporary traffic signals.
Starting Sunday night, October 18, night drivers on I-40 should expect temporary single-lane closures near Mile Marker 329 between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM daily. Transportation officials advise all motorists to exercise extra caution, obey posted speed limits, and watch for worker crews when traveling through active work zones.
