MAN AND WOMAN LOSE $2,000 IN FAKE GRAND JURY SCAM
Yesterday, Deputy Morgan Alvarez spoke with a man and a woman in the lobby of the Cumberland County Justice Center who said they received a phone call from a man claiming to work for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
The man claimed that the male victim had missed grand jury and owed $4,000 and that if he did not pay, he would be arrested.
The female victim said she sent them $2,000 through an app until the app would not allow her to send anymore. The caller then told them that they needed to go to Tobacco and Beverage Mart on Lantana Road and send money via Bitcoin.
Once there, the female victim said that they knew something wasn’t right, and the caller said that if they went to the sheriff’s office, the male victim would be arrested and have to spend up to 60 days in jail.
They said that at this point, they just decided to come to the sheriff’s office.
