MAN AND WOMAN LOSE OVER $63,000 IN IDENTITY THEFT
Yesterday, Officer Steven McNeal of the Crossville Police Department spoke with a woman over the phone about possible identity theft and wire fraud. The woman said she received a letter from Wells Fargo about a payment for a Devalon excavator that was financed from Tri-County Equipment.
She told the officer that she spoke with Tri-County Equipment, and a female used her social security number and her husband’s company ID number. Her husband owns a home building business, and the total amount stolen was around $63,730.
The officer went to Tri-County Equipment and spoke with a representative who said that on the 21st of January, they received a call from a woman portraying herself as the victim who said that she was interested in purchasing a Devalon excavator and attachments.
The representative said that the whole transaction was done electronically and once financed, the female subject arranged for a company to pick up the equipment. The female subject had I-40 BP pick up the equipment and transport it to their lot on Miller avenue.
Currently there is no video of the incident or suspects.
